On a completely different note, Laura and I watched a pretty good movie the other day called “The Exorcism of Emily Rose.”  It was a bit different than I expected, not having read any reviews, in that it was more of a courtroom drama than a traditional horror flick.  Of particular interest was the fact that the movie is based on true events, and that a catholic-church approved exorcism WAS, in fact, performed on an afflicted young woman that really existed.  It turns out many of the details of the story had been changed… among them the name of the young woman and the location of the events.  Her name was Anneliese Michel, and the events took place in Bavaria.  In the movie and in real life, the priest who performed the exorcism was brought up on charges of negligent homicide, and the trial presented arguments for possession versus mental illness.  Interesting stuff to think about, really. What do you folks think of exorcisms?  Do you believe in demons?

Who among you has ever considered military service?  What were your thoughts?  What do you think of the idea of a present-day draft?  Personally, I couldn’t see signing up for the military in this day and age, mainly because I don’t trust those in charge enough to be deciding what issues are worth giving my life for.  I would seriously consider signing up for service if I felt the cause was both just and sufficiently important (i.e. along the lines of WWII), but even then it would be a weighty decision.  Thoughts?

Nope, I haven’t seen the movie, but I did just finish the book, which was excellent.  It probably isn’t the kind of thing I would have picked up on my own, but I got a copy in my Christmas stocking and started reading it on the plane.  (ahem, I suppose that would more accurately be a holiday stocking given my beliefs, but what the hell?  Christmas is almost more secular than religious these days, I fear.)

In any event, I am glad that I did read it, in that it gave me an interesting look into the life of one of the Marines (an enlisted man — a scout/sniper) during the first Gulf War.  The fellow is really sharp, and has some interesting perspectives on the whole mess, even while participating in some of the very same activities that have made me think that a great many young military types are nimrods.  I am definitely a lot more open minded these days to people of every make, model, and stripe.  It is awfully easy to write people off unless you take the time to talk with them a bit and see their perspective.  But I digress.  The book is really a pleasure to read.  All the more timely given the current business in Iraq, which, from what I hear, has been much more hairy than the first Gulf War in almost every way.  The language in this book can be pretty raw, but if your ears (eyes?) are not easily offended, I recommend it.

I am going to try to make a point of writing in this fairly often.  Laura works evenings, so I definitely have the time.  Who knows… maybe I will sharpen my rather rusty writing skills before all is said and done?  Also, seems like this might be a good spot to have some good discussions that go beyond what people are comfortable shooting off in a quick e-mail from work.
